-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Jer 14:10) Thus says the LORD to this people, "Even so they have loved to wander; they have not kept their feet in check. Therefore the LORD does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity and call their sins to account."
(Jer 14:11) So the LORD said to me, "Do not pray for the welfare of this people.
(Jer 14:12) "When they fast, I am not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to make an end of them by the sword, famine and pestilence." (NASB)

The prophet was given directly by the Lord God this revelation that we have just read. By the way, the prophet was put into a dilemma. What people thought of regarding the presence of this prophet was; "God sent us the prophet to bless us.''
Today, even if people are talking about Jesus, they have had such wrong preconceptions about blessing. They never think that Jesus has come to judge. It seems that this is human nature. When some curious things happen around them, they have the habit of interpreting them always for their benefit. They never think that he has come to expose the wrongs of "me who lives on this land" and "to curse me."
We can know who Jesus is also through the prophet Jeremiah of the Old Testament indirectly. He belongs to the line of Jesus, for he is a prophet. He and Jesus are on the same line. It is proven through what happened at the mount of transfiguration where Moses, Elijah and Jesus were on the same line. So, when Jesus was speaking on that mount, Elijah and Moses appeared.
So after the apostles in the New Testament received the Spirit, when they were interpreting Moses, Elijah and the Old Testament as a whole; the apostles cannot interpret Moses, Elijah and the Old Testament as a whole from the human side, instead they should go to Jesus and then interpret what Jesus has the relationship with them. That is the interpretation of the apostles.
When people who try to interpret and understand anybody, they just interpret him/her based on the premise about what they have goodwill and who they are good people. So when they are talking about someone, they always think of themselves a good man. Even though they do not give up this preconception, they intend to interpret anything around themselves in such a way which ‘I will interpret you in a good way as a good man.’
But we have found that if we think of the scriptures and the Old Testament in Jesus’ side, we will notice that we are sinners in the eyes of Jesus. And we will also realize that we have been sinners of understanding anything and everybody without knowing Jesus.
For example, as Stephen was stoned to death as a martyr in the book of Acts, a man named Saul having approved of Stephen’s death had his own interpretation that Stephen deserved to die. Saul’s interpretation is that he looked around people like Stephen who believe in Jesus via the invisible God. When Saul saw Christians who believe in Jesus and violate the will of God via the LORD God, those were all heresy he thought.
So it is his confidence that Saul should get rid of Christians who believe in Jesus to be more loyal and religious life to God. The formula is bound to come naturally to be glory to God by doing that. Saul would have a clear mind. He has not rather certain feelings against people, he even lent money to those who believe in Jesus, He has not rather received any money back, and he has not rather gotten hurt in his pride, but he thought to himself that Christians must deserve to be eliminated on earth.
That was what Saul knows about the God’s truth. However, according to the Acts, while Saul reached Damascus on his journey, he met Jesus. He said “Lord!” And then “Who are you?” This is a somewhat contradictory story. Saul knew that the One who came to him is God.
When somebody says “Lord”, he knows Him. When Saul said “Lord, who are you?”, Jesus answered him as follow; “I am Jesus, whom you are prosecuting. Saul regarded himself as a legitimate man who had seen the spiritual world, the invisible world, via God.
But Jesus exchanged the world of the LORD with the man named Jesus of Nazareth for Saul. It means that God all humanity has known is a false god that the Devil created.
The God of all human being is an imaginable god that the Devil put it into their hearts. As a single person with an exception meets Jesus, he/she is sure to confess that he/she has regarded Jesus of Nazareth as him lightly due to his/her wrong misconceptions about the Lord Jesus. That person is the real one who met Jesus.
If a man puts aside the way Saul met Jesus believes in the Lord, Jesus of Nazareth is a fake. Because Jesus of Nazareth came to be despised, stricken and had a curse by men.
All of us must come under attack from the real Cross according to a certain pastor. Who attacked in Saul’s days? Churchmen who believed in Jesus had attacked. As church men attacked real Christians like Stephen, a man named Saul who has never met Jesus joined them to attack real Christians at the same time in such a way to protect God in his thought.
All of us must be put on the spot where real Christians were stoned to death today. That is the way Jesus has done. That is also where Jeremiah stands in today’s text.
If we do not approach the new covenant of Jesus, we cannot understand Jeremiah the prophet. Because Jeremiah the prophet is a man in the day of the Old Testament, and Jesus is a man of accomplishing the new covenant, but we cannot interpret the Old Testament directly. If we try to interpret it, it will be wrong preconceptions. If we do it, we will be like Saul at most. It will be intolerable to the Lord even though we believe in God from the viewpoint of us.
In fact, they do not know Jesus at all. If you heard of the story of what I said and asked me about ‘What is the real Jesus?’ In your mind as rebuttal, I think today’s text would answer you clearly. In today’s text I told you at first time it is embarrassing to me. Because all the people thought a prophet sent by God who always helps them and is existed for Israel, but today’s text says ‘Do not pray for the wellbeing of this people.’
People tend to regard the Messiah Jesus as a giver of the blessing for them. Jesus is a Savior. Obviously, he is our Savior. But he does not give us a blessing. What Jesus gives us is not a blessing but a salvation instead.
People really hate a curse but what they do not like is a habit and hobby. The curse is gushing from the cursed land. The curse has been gushing from the land since the time of Genesis three in the Old Testament. As I spoke to you at a morning sermon today, people often complain about what they have been in trouble with their lives even though they have got grace, as a free gift, from God. They just say that “If I got grace of God, why would I have trouble having life on this earth.”
This is a kind of fighting among a curse and instincts of a man. It is called the survival of the world. By the way, the Lord blocked the tree of life in the garden of Eden. The upper line of the wilderness and the covenant is the line of the dimension of life. The heaven line below is the line of the dimension of survival. Because they have trouble living on earth, they regard it as a curse not grace and God’s blessing. Lord does not give us life due to your difficult lives. If it is hard for you to survive on earth, you had better die than live. A man who eats the tree of the knowledge of good and evil must die. After that he takes the tree of life given by the Lord, eats, and lives forever.
Jesus also goes up to heaven without pain but he participated in the resurrection through the death of the cross. He made the world of the resurrection by himself. That is why Jesus made Mary’s brother, Lazarus, die. After the death of Lazarus, his two sisters, Martha and Mary, revealed themselves to be the dimension of the survival level at the feet of Jesus. While they thought of their brother Lazarus in such a way as the dimension of the survival 24 hours a day, they said to Jesus, “Bring our brother back to life. Why did you let our brother who loved you die?”
Even the Israelites complained about our lives in the wilderness, the manna came down the next morning. From the beginning, our Lord has not been interested in our survival at all. The reason is why Jesus came to earth is that he teaches us not to be bound by our life. Manna comes down not at night but in the morning. Modern people eat a slice of bread for a big dinner from early in the morning.
However, God gives us grace and day every morning and gives us sleep and rest at night. And God commands us to open our eyes to the life of Jesus. It can extend to the evening time. And also we get up the following morning, God is planning to give us another grace.
Even the Israelites complained against Moses and God, God gave them manna every day except the seventh day. But they should have passed through the wilderness not because of their survival but because of showing themselves as a vessel of their God in the dimension of the eternal life. But unfortunately, they failed to think of that way.
Anyway, they entered the land of the promise of God’s grace. Promise and the land combined together. The land gushes out a curse. If they live in the land of promise, the curse will stop. Blessing is laid over a curse like a pork belly. If the promise is attached to the land which is being cursed is becoming the blessed land and the model of heaven. As a result, what blessing and curse mean is that we deserve to be a curse and be judged by God.
Those people who complained against the Lord in the wilderness got to know that the Lord had already prepared for them after they entered it. There were such as a bunch of choicest grapes and a land flowing with milk and honey in Canaan. This is not our efforts and works to get them but the Lord had prepared them for the Israelites. Like this, eternal life is the Lord has prepared for all of us not our work.
I did the talk in Pusan yesterday. And I told them as follow: What we eat before the Lord means we just enjoy eating the supper the Lord has prepared but not that we try to prepare our supper.
“Church, please do not do anything. I am here as your bridegroom. You know I am here as the Lord Jesus. I love you as a beautiful bride based on the book of the Song of Songs of Solomon in the Old Testaments.” That is what the Lord gives us a gift of love not the survival dimension but the life dimension.
That is why Jeremiah the prophet said to the Israelites harshly to take off the sinful mind from them.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we tend to relate our survival to God on a daily basis. We have complained against You because of the things You let us suffer. It is a vicious witness that we do not love You but love ourselves instead. We ask You to help us to fall in love with You deeply. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
